You knew it would happen right? New Directions had to win Regionals otherwise what would drive the story for the rest of the season? That’s one of the traps the show fell into early last year when the writers set the performance contests as the end goal because eventually they will run out of contests to win (next year’s end of season contest is World Show Choir Competition in Dubai). Yet aside from the trap, I’ve been pleased with the second half of the season.
This episode was all about the music because everyone knew they were going to win and the writers didn’t even try to draw out a “judges deliberating” scene or any more Sue drama which was deflating in terms of plot. One rule of writing is to create “tension on every page” as one writer put it and there was very little tension. The scenes came fast and furious (watch for new movie coming out about fast cars going fast) which is the result of the writers trying to stuff so many different plot lines about all the characters into the show. Then they all come crashing together in one mad rush and a flurry of songs.
Let’s review:
-Quinn and Finn are kind of back together
-Rachel still wants Finn and he keeps leading her on…or does he?
-Sue tries to destroy Glee club by coaching other team which didn’t even come close to working
-Santana and Britney have a strange pseudo-romantic relationship that one wants and the other doesn’t get
-Kurt and Blaine boy crushes that just got physical
-Will tries to keep it all together as usual
…and the rest tag along for the ride.
They did a decent job of flushing the toilet on most of these but the Quinn, Finn, Rachel love triangle. And I’m sure the Kurt/Blaine thing will add drama leading to Kurt leaving Dalton Academy and rejoining McKinley just in time to go to New York for Nationals.
Now it’s time for the show to release another cd with the original songs, which were pretty good by the way, so everyone rush out and buy.
