So I’ve taken a bit of time away from the Glee blog as the new site format happened, oh and it happened, so now I have to catch up before the next new shows start after the Super Bowl. Oh man, that’s like the cigarette after…sorry, kids show here (and a very archaic cliche I’ll admit).
So what’s been happening with everyone’s favourite high-school musical show? If the “Britney Episode” was the low-point, the show has definitely gotten interesting to say the least.
Episode 6 – “Kirk’s Nightmare and “Sexy” Biest”
Honestly, I didn’t know how to feel after this episode. Kirk has to deal with violent bullying and ends up eventually leaving the school while the “boys” try to cool their mojo by thinking about Coach Biest. The first song was Puck and Artie playing bob Marley in the courtyard and ended with a repeat of “girls vs boys” with a mash-up. It also featured the Warblers, an all-boys acapella choir who like to sing Katie Perry apparently (catchy song better than the original but still, a little disturbing…also, can’t get that song out of my head).
I liked it and felt like the writers put some work into the story rather than continue to milk the music cow. There is a deliberate attempt at gender role reversal as boys sing girls’ songs, Tina tries to cool her libido (unusual since the stereotypical moronic horny guy is a long tradition in tv), and the tough-guy homophobe revealed as the insecure kids questioning sexuality (ok, maybe not so unusual for tv). Girls in leather playing Bon Jovi is always awesome and to mash it with the Stones, bravo music producer Brad, bravo.
Coach Biest is a good addition to the show and she was used well in this episode. Speaking of coaches, I saw the old coach Tanaka at the rec center last week during some kids tv show shoot. He was definitely the big cheese on set because he was wearing a robe.
Need to keep it short since there’s four more to go before Sunday
